what makes a good sauna?
There’s one simple rule that separates a great sauna from the rest: uniform heat. Even, uniform heat isn’t just a technical detail—it’s the essence of a truly exceptional sauna experience. It's the canary in the coalmine that tells you that everything has been properly considered. A sauna with even heat wraps your body in a steady, consistent warmth from head to toe. It minimizes harsh temperature fluctuations, creates an ideal atmosphere for relaxation, and maximizes the efficiency of your sauna’s design. When a sauna fails to deliver even heat, the flaws become impossible to ignore. Uneven heat is the silent saboteur of comfort, efficiency, and functionality.
It's very difficult to overstate the importance of good ventilation. I'll go this far: good ventilation is just as important as high temperatures for a proper sauna experience. The overwhelming majority of saunas you've been in have had poor ventilation; poor ventilation has probably turned more people off of saunas than any other factor. Proper ventilation is the lifeblood of a good sauna. It ensures heat is spread evenly throughout the space. It ensures the air doesn't become stale. It ensures that the heat is soft, the air is fresh, and the experience is mesmerizing. Understanding saunas requires understanding ventilation; click here to learn more.1
A sauna without proper insulation loses heat faster than the heater can replace it. This creates hot and cold spots, forcing the heater to work harder and leading to uneven temperatures throughout the space. Barrel saunas are a prime example: a single thin layer of wood separates the interior from the elements, resulting in dramatic heat loss and uneven performance.1 A well-insulated sauna, on the other hand, retains heat wonderfully. It reduces heat loss, meaning that the stove doesn't have to work as hard. It ensures that the heat is even and consistent. It reflects heat back into the room, leading to a soft, gentle heat that envelops you from all sides.
It's super trendy for high-end saunas to have huge, floor-to-ceiling windows. There are a lot of reasons for this: you might want to take advantage of a nice view; you might not want to feel boxed in; you might want to see and be seen. But giant windows are incompatible with good saunas. They don't retain heat (a double-pane window has an R-value of 3-4; a triple-pane window has a value of 6-8). This means that the sauna will leak a tremendous amount of heat, which means that we won't meet our goal of even, uniform heat.
The stove is the heart of the sauna, and its thermal mass determines how consistently the heat is delivered. Heavy stoves with substantial stone capacity (i.e., at least 200 pounds worth) retain heat longer and release it steadily, avoiding temperature fluctuations. Without sufficient thermal mass, the sauna becomes prone to uncomfortable spikes and drops in temperature, undermining the experience.
The number one rule that Finns have for their saunas is: feet above the rocks. Benches placed too low mean your feet sit in cooler air while your head bakes in hotter temperatures—an immediate violation of the uniform heat rule. The difference between the temperatures at foot and head levels should be as small as possible.
An adjacent change room isn’t just a luxury—it’s a practical necessity. Think about this: if your sauna is 85°C and outside it's -30°C, where are you going to sit between sessions?1 What's going to happen every time you open the door? Without a transitional space, your sauna will fluctuate in temperature wildly, and you won't want to do more than a couple of sessions before you call it a day.
Does the heat feel consistent from head to toe? Are there noticeable hot or cold spots? Do you find yourself adjusting to compensate for discomfort? Is the air fresh and invigorating? A great sauna passes this test every time, delivering an experience of seamless, enveloping warmth. Uniform heat is the standard that sets exceptional saunas apart from the rest.
